Kamchatka has a large bear population, and there are specific behavioral rules and defensive measures to follow when encountering bears. Ritual bear hunting once played an important role, particularly during the initiation of young hunters. Today, bear meat serves primarily as a supplementary food for various reasons, although its flavorful fat is still highly valued.
