Yuri Mikhailovich Ninvit
In his brief biography, Y.M. Ninvit tells how he has been involved in reindeer husbandry since childhood. Now he is proud to pass on this knowledge to his children, who continue this work. He emphasizes how varied these activities are, since one moves in a circle between seasonally different pasture grounds. One must take care to feed and water the animals in a special way, so that they put on fat in time for the winter. He mentions how special occurrences can affect the calm grazing process. For example, in winter one often has to protect the herd against wolves around the clock. Y.M. Ninvit explains how hoof disease can occur when reindeer are startled, especially by partridges, and then run quickly over rocky ground and get injured. To prevent resulting infections from spreading through the herd, they must be treated quickly, as demonstrated by V.A. Nesterov in the film shown here. Likewise, medication is administered to the animals in late autumn so that no horsefly larvae develop in the fur, which would lead to holes in there.
