Lyubov' Il'inichna Ninvit
L.I. Ninvit, the wife of Yuri Mikhailovich, tells how she was introduced to the work in the reindeer camp by her grandmothers only in her later youth. She describes in detail the preparation of certain dishes from reindeer products. These include special meatballs prepared with fat so that they do not freeze when reindeer herders have to eat them during their work in severe frost. She emphasizes that reindeer herders need a rich meal in the morning for the whole day. She mentions that in spring at the time of calving reindeer must stay at warmer places protected from the wind. In summer sometimes only one of the reindeer herding team remains at a fishing site. She tells how tents are sewn from furs, and how efforts are made to keep children from school as long as possible so they can be with the reindeer herd.
