Supplementary feeding of reindeer
In this video excerpt, Anders Erling, a Pite Saami reindeer herder, gives examples of the rich Pite Saami vocabulary used for describing different types of reindeer, and why this is particularly useful when working with others in reindeer husbandry. He also talks about working with reindeer, including enticing them with moss. Finally, he can be seen feeding one of his tamer animals by hand. Although he does not discuss this directly in this excerpt, one reason the reindeer are gathered in the woods in this case is because he was forced to feed them supplementary food (grain pellets) because the natural conditions that winter were too poor to ensure the animals' survival. This practice is expensive and requires significantly more work and logistics than when the reindeer can survive on their own. With climate change increasingly affecting the weather in a negative way, such as causing warmer, rainy periods in the middle of winter (see also the other Pite Saami video excerpt), reindeer herders like Anders Erling are faced with this situation on an increasingly regular basis.
