Gathering plants around the Koryak settlement of Lesnaya

The Nymylans (coastal Koryaks) of the settlement of Lesnaya on the northern west coast of Kamchatka gather numerous plants during the short snow-free period of summer. This covers the need for important vitamins for the winter. Some plants are also used for healing purposes. Certain plants provide materials for the manufacture of utensils. Already in spring, which in Kamchatka begins after the snow melts in June, fresh plant shoots and a special species of wild garlic are gathered. Later in the summer, willowherb and a variety of different grasses and berry species are added. In autumn, berries of mountain ash and seeds of the Siberian twisted pine are collected. Nutritious roots are dug out with hooks or rodent caches are excavated, where mice have collected their foraged items during summer.
