Hunting of sea mammals by the Koryaks of Lesnaya

In addition to fishing, hunting marine mammals provides another important livelihood for the Koryaks of Lesnaya on the northern coast of Kamchatka. They hunt seals and bearded seals in particular, which provide important materials as well as meat. Among other things, the skins are used to make straps, which are also a sought-after barter item for reindeer herders in the interior of the peninsula. The special importance of seals is also expressed during the autumn reconciliation feasts with nature among coastal Koryaks. In the past, whales were also hunted along Kamchatka's coasts, as evidenced by the whale festivals that were still extensively documented around 1900. Today, indigenous people in northeast Siberia only hunt whales on the coasts of Chukotka within the framework of quotas set by the International Whaling Commission.
